Worldviews
Today my devotional, "Do We Know Jesus" by Adolph Schlatter, read:
"Our worldview is true because, and to the extent to which, it arises from our experience. At the same time, however, it is completely certain that we are not at the center of the universe and are not its architects or rulers. For this reason our ideas about this world do not yet tell us what will take place or what ought to take place." Page 280, June 9.
The clincher for me: "What ought to take place." I have a way I think things should go, but God often has a different idea and plan for it. When I wrangle my way into my days, God's plan still stands and He will patiently wait, allow both pleasant and unpleasant consequences, create opportunities for me to turn to His "ought to take place" instead of my own.
How often do I presume upon grace by delaying the work I must do -- the dishes?! I am able to provide all sorts of somewhat plausible, mostly specious, arguments for why I (I) must not be the one to do them. However, God has placed me in this place, in front of these dishes, at this time, to do them, to model doing them, to serve, and to steward. (BTW -- this goes for anyone who dirties a dish! Argh, is that my "ought?")
This also goes for having the difficult conversations. How often do we simply pray about it and hope that God silently works without our uttering a word? That is the time when we fall, run eagerly, into "God's sovereign ought." He will do it, because it is what He wants. But does He force His will on anyone? We forget that we engage with Him to do His work of loving others. So we keep silent and piously pray about a situation.
Yes, I am praying about several situations. Some heavy, some not so heavy. All peppered and poisoned by my "ought" and fear of man and only by prayer will I be able to release my strangle hold grip on my "ought" and let a tiny bit of strength grab on to God's "ought."
Abba, today, Lord, grand courage and wisdom to acknowledge that my ways are not your ways, and lean not on my own understand, but trust in the Lord with all my heart. Call to mind Peter's words that tell us that we have a something greater, the Word. Amen.
2 Peter 1:19-20 ESV
19And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.
